Learning is an act of discipleship. God has created us to learn and grow not just through acquiring knowledge, but by connecting that knowledge to our own lived experiences. In other words, our faith becomes real when it is acted upon in our everyday lives; and as we act upon that faith, our knowledge and conviction deepens and grows.
The exercises in the Learning Guide are best completed in a small group, where dialogue, questions, and stories can flow in a respectful and safe environment. Consider appointing a facilitator to guide the conversation in a timely manner and to ensure that the discussion remains relevant to people’s experiences, includes everyone and their diverse viewpoints, and challenges people to engage their knowledge by finding an immediate context to apply their learning.
This Learning Guide accompanies articles and artistic content in Resonance, Volume 4.1: “What is Evangelical?” In this volume, we turn to explore the shape, characteristics, and concerns of evangelical theology. The term “evangelical” has played an important role in the theological conversation of the church community from the earliest apostles to the present day. It is a loaded word that often conjures a passionate reaction – for good or ill – among those who hear it. In particular, the term has been confused and degraded by its recent employment in the American political rhetoric of the last few years. Resonance as a theological journal has self-identified as “evangelical” from its founding, but given the present confusion surrounding the word it is important to clarify what we believe the term means and the nature of the historical and global movement that we seek to be an heir of in today’s cultural moment.
Thank you for supporting Resonance. We pray that God speaks to you through this collection of theological reflections.
