Learning is an act of discipleship. God has created us to learn and grow not just through acquiring knowledge, but by connecting that knowledge to our own lived experiences. In other words, our faith becomes real when it is acted upon in our everyday lives; and as we act upon that faith, our knowledge and conviction deepens and grows.
The exercises in the Learning Guide are best completed in a small group, where dialogue, questions, and stories can flow in a respectful and safe environment. Consider appointing a facilitator to guide the conversation in a timely manner and to ensure that the discussion remains relevant to people’s experiences, includes everyone and their diverse viewpoints, and challenges people to engage their knowledge by finding an immediate context to apply their learning.
This Learning Guide accompanies articles and artistic content in Resonance, Volume 4.2: “Christianity and Culture.” Culture is the term which best captures the dynamics of human society as human beings grapple with the created world, seek to organize themselves, make sense of their place in reality, and express their communal identity. In every generation God’s people have been challenged with the task of navigating through the assumptions of their culture. This requires them to critically evaluate the worldview they inherited from their ancestors in light of God’s word; and thus to think and behave in counter-cultural ways. The history of the Christian church and of Christian missions is, in one sense, a treasure trove of tales demonstrating how God’s people have responded to human culture—with its moral and ethical norms, embedded social structures, religious/non-religious values, customs, and political structures.
